Contents Notes–Local practice

What triggers the need for contents notes? Supply a formal content note for all materials for which contents are requested on order slips.

  • Because contents notes facilitate keyword searching in the catalog, the presence of an 856 content note URL does not serve as a replacement for content notes.

If a 505 content note is already present in the record, you may stop. If not, you are encouraged to check the record again in Connexion to see if it has been upgraded to include content (in that case, overlay the record). Alternatively, search for content notes that you can copy, paste, and reformat to RDA standards, either from similar bibliographic records or online sources. If you findpre-AACR2 formatted contents notes, it is acceptable to leave them in that format.

Standards

AARC2 rule 2.7B18 and LCRIs

RDA 25.1 and (especially) 25.1.1.3 and LC-PCC-PSs See the ‘Structured description of the related work” (second example) at 25.1.1.3.

Technique

Add content notes from the Table of Contents (unless you see inaccuracies, in which case use the chapter titles appearing in the book.)

Do not include “Introduction” “Preface” “Bibliography” “Index” and similar chapter/section headings.

Volume numbers and other sequential designations are included, but chapter numbers generally are not.

End field with a period (.) if contents are complete and it doesn’t end with another mark of punctuation. If contents are incomplete, do not end with a period.

Tagging and indicators: 505 (tag) indicators are in first indicator only. Second indicator is blank.

# = blank or space throughout these instructions.
