“Loans” versus “Articles”

Interlibrary Loan requests can be divided into two groups:  Loans and Articles.

loan is any stand-alone item that requires package delivery.  This includes:

  • Books
  • Audiobooks
  • CDs
  • Videos/DVDs
  • Microfilm/Microfiche
  • Theses
  • Individually published reports

An article is any item that is copied out of a stand-alone item.  This includes:

  • Journal/newspaper/magazine articles
  • Book chapters
  • Papers published as part of conference proceedings

Most of these items have their own specific request forms on the ILL user page.  For those that do not, here’s a rule of thumb:  If it’s a loan, use the Request a Book form, then indicate the actual format in the “Notes” field.
