Shipping Returns

Shipping items back to their home libraries can be done in four major ways: Kudzu, PASCAL, UPS, or standard library mail. Each of these has a slightly different process.

Kudzu Returns

Schools who are members of the Kudzu consortium use two methods for shipping. Pink bags are used for all schools who use the Lanter courier, and UPS is used for anyone who has opted not to use the courier. UPS instructions can be found later in the shipping section of this manual.

Pink Bags

  1. Place a thank you note into each item being shipped.
  2. Bring the items to the Kudzu station.
  3. For each item, check if a Kudzu bag is already prepared for the school the items are being returned to.
    1. If so, remove the band from the item, but leave all of the lending library’s paperwork inside, and place the items atop the bag.
    2. If not, create a bag for the item.  Then, remove the band from the item, but leave all of the lending library’s paperwork inside, and place the item atop the bag.

PASCAL

Schools who participate in the PASCAL Delivers program use a courier to transfer books between schools. Interlibrary Loan returns from Clemson to a participating PASCAL library are piggy-backed on to this system. A list of participating PASCAL libraries can be found at the end of this section.

  1. Place a thank you note in each item being returned.
  2. Remove the band from the item, but leave all of the lending library’s paperwork inside.
  3. Indicate on the over (with a post-it note or on the sticker from the lending library) that is it a return and to which school it should be sent.
  4. Place the item on the PASCAL ready to ship shelf in the PASCAL processing area.

UPS

UPS is used to send items to Kudzu libraries who do not use pink bags, to send items that require special shipping, to send items indicated as UPS return by the lending library, and to send items that are well overdue.

  1. Place a thank you note in each item being returned.
  2. Match the printed shipping labels to the items. The transaction number appears at the bottom of the shipping label and can be used to make this easier.
  3. Remove the band from the item, but leave all of the lending library’s paperwork inside.
  4. Place a sticky note on the from cover that says “UPS” and place the shipping label between the front cover and title page (or someplace similar) so it sticks out like a bookmark.
  5. Place the item in the UPS shipping area of the outgoing ILL area.

Library Rate

Library rate is used to send most of the items we mail.

  1. Place a thank you note in each item being returned.
  2. Match the printed shipping labels to the items. The transaction number appears at the bottom of the shipping label and can be used to make this easier.
  3. Remove the band from the item, but leave all of the lending library’s paperwork inside, and take note of any special shipping requirements you wrote down.
  4. Package the items at the mailing station. Be sure to put items in a box that require a box and use jiffy bags for the rest.
  5. Place the items in the outgoing ILL area.
