Clemson and “the” Heisman

Clemson and “the” Heisman

Documents and photographs in Special Collections & Archives reveal Clemson’s historic connection with John Heisman, namesake of the Heisman Trophy.  These include the contract for John Heisman’s third year coaching football at Clemson, signed in November 1901 for the 1902 season.  Football coaching was a part time job in those years so Heisman also coached Clemson’s baseball team from 1901 to 1903.   And still had time to market himself as an instructor in “gymnasium and track athletics.  He also performed with the Drama Club.
