“The Father of IPTAY”

Recently processed additions to The Rupert H. Fike Papers (mss 34) doubled the size of this small but important collection.  Fike, a 1908 Clemson graduate and namesake of Fike Recreation Center, was known as “ The Father of IPTAY” for his role in organizing the first meeting of the organization at his Atlanta home in 1934.

While working as a radiologist, Fike also served as president of IPTAY and as an alumni representative on the Clemson Athletic Council from the mid-1930s until his death in 1956.  Letters and other documents in the Fike Papers provide a fascinating look into the operation of Clemson’s athletic program, particularly the football program, from the 1920s to the 1950s.  The collection also includes research and a draft for an unpublished book titled “Fifty Some Odd Years of Football at Clemson” which Fike was working on at the time of his death.
