Transaction File Activity

Millennium’s transaction file holds detail data about the additions (e.g., record inserts and overlays in Data Exchange) and changes (e.g., record updates via Global/Rapid Update) made to the database storing the different record types (e.g., authority, bibliographic, patron) on a daily basis. This file has a set growth limit and stores the data written to it until a daily backup is run. Millennium is designed in such a way that when this allocated file space fills up nothing more can be written to the database and the whole system shuts down.

As a precaution against a system crash and as a courtesy to staff doing system intensive tasks, let’s alert the systems manager and others of any large record loads and/or global changes.

Tips

A general recommendation for working with large record files in either Data Exchange or Global Update is breaking them up into more manageable sizes; e.g., separate out a 50,000 record file into three 15,000 record files and one 5,000 record file. Other suggestions involve changing default settings in the Cataloging application and Data Exchange module. The number of records retrieved in a Global Update search can be limited by the Max Search Results setting in Admin | Settings | Global Update. Also, know when loading a large file that a small subset of the total records included in the file can be specified in the Maximum Records to Load field in the Data Exchange load window.
